About Maya Angelou Elementary School
Welcome to Maya Angelou Elementary School, a place where the spirit of learning and the legacy of Maya Angelou converge to create a nurturing environment dedicated to academic excellence and holistic development. Named in honor of the influential and multi-talented writer, Maya Angelou, our school carries forward her legacy of wisdom, creativity, and inspiration.
Maya Angelou's profound impact on literature and culture is celebrated through her timeless works such as "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," "Phenomenal Woman," and "On the Pulse of Morning," the powerful poem she recited at President Bill Clinton’s 1993 inauguration. At our dedication ceremony, a signed poster from Maya Angelou herself graces our entryway, serving as a constant reminder of the depth of knowledge and insight she shared with the world.

- Founded in 2004, Angelou Elementary proudly houses the district’s Two-Way Dual Language Program. This innovative program fosters bilingualism and cultural understanding by teaching students to think, communicate, read, and write proficiently in both English and Spanish. Beginning in kindergarten and extending through eighth grade at McLoughlin Middle School, this program enriches our students' educational journey with language skills and global perspectives. Classrooms are thoughtfully composed to ensure a balanced mix of English and Spanish-speaking students, promoting collaborative learning and intercultural experiences.
- Angelou Elementary has garnered recognition for its dedication to excellence in education. In 2008 and 2010, we were honored as a National Network Partnership School Winner, reflecting our commitment to fostering strong connections between school, families, and the community. Our Monster Math Night family event, a testament to our vibrant school community, was chosen for publication in the NNPS Promising Partnership Practices in 2012.
- At Angelou Elementary, our ultimate goal is to provide a safe, nurturing, and first-class learning environment that empowers all students to reach their full potential. We believe in the power of collaboration among parents, teachers, staff, and enthusiastic learners to create an educational ecosystem that nurtures individuality and progress. We invite and encourage your active participation in our school's activities and initiatives as we work together to show our children the value of a successful and fulfilling educational journey.
We are excited to embark on this educational journey with you and your child, and we look forward to forging a strong partnership in their growth and development. Together, let's create an environment that not only celebrates Maya Angelou's legacy but also shapes our students into compassionate, knowledgeable, and empowered global citizens.
